[CAR-PGa] Facebook RPG Advocacy group

Greetings,
Apparently the Facebook RPG Advocacy group, was not aware of CAR-PGa.
I've posted to let them know:
http://www.facebook.com/groups/332825630105344/permalink/431844096870163

I'm not all that active on Facebook, but came across this group and it appears
pretty active.

Hopefully they will sign up.

One of the members I've seen post recently, Sarah Lynne Bowman wrote one of
the books I've heavily quoted (auto-generated quotes) on the RPG Research
website.
Her book is titled: "The Functions of Role-playing Games".
http://rpgr.org/documents/reference-material/the-functions-of-role-playing-
games-by-sarah-lynne-bowman

She is also part of the fledgling "International Journal of Role-playing" (not
sure if I mentioned that to folks previously.

Enjoy!

Honda aims at 10m units by FY20 in India

Japanese auto major Honda is embarking on an aggressive ride in India to challenge the number one position of erstwhile partner Hero in two-wheeler segment with plans to produce 10 million units by 2019-20 that may entail the company having up to eight plants in India.

Besides, the company's Indian arm Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) plans to accelerate the rate of new model launches while lowering prices of the products by increasing localisation levels. It will also hire up to 4,000 people for its third plant in Karnataka.

"With our third plant coming up in Karnataka, in fiscal 2013-14 we will have a total production capacity of four million units. In the long term, the target is to have a capacity of 10 million units by 2019-20," HMSI President and CEO Keita Muramatsu said.

When asked how many plants would the company need to have in order to meet the envisaged target, he said based on its current capacity, "about seven to eight plants" will be required.

Honda's erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp has already announced its intention to have USD 10 billion turnover in the next five years with sales of 10 million units, out of which exports would be 10 percent of the total sales.

HMSI's Manesar plant has a capacity of 1.6 million units annually, while that of the Tapukara plant is 1.2 million. The upcoming plant in Karnataka will have the capacity of produce 1.2 million units per year initially.

Muramatsu declined to comment on the investments required to meet the company's long term target saying the focus currently was on the third plant in Karnataka, which is expected to start production by the first quarter of FY14. The company is investing Rs 1,500 crore on the plant.

HMSI will hire 3,000-4,000 people for the new plant, Muramatsu said, adding that "when all the three plants are operational the company will have a total of 13,000-14,000 workers".

Commenting on the new products programme, he said: "We want to accelerate the introduction of new models, reduce product development time and bring down the price of products. We want to utilise local sourcing and production infrastructure and create products for customers in India through our research at our new technical centre."

HMSI has invested Rs 150 crore at the new technical centre at Manesar, where Honda Research and Development India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honda R&D, Japan, is also shifting its entire two-wheeler operations in India to facilitate closer coordination and synergy of operations.

In terms of sales, Muramatsu said the company has crossed a cumulative of 10 million customers and it expects to touch the 12 million milestone in the next fiscal.

To boost sales, HMSI is also expanding network and plans to add new 500 outlets to have a total of 2,000 sales and service touch-points across India by FY13 end.

[CAR-PGa] The Light at the End

So, a book review for The Light at the End by John Skipp and Craig Spector includes the paragraph, "Joseph works as a delivery man. He wants to be a hero, probably because he plays Dungeons and Dragons. He believes the killer isn't human. He helps Stephen and Josephine track down Rudy in hopes of finding the killer and saving the world." [http://www.unshelved.com/bookclub/2012-11-16#B007HNE9KA] The book was originally published in 1986, but there's a 25th anniversary edition out as of last February.

Do we have anything on this from back in the day? Would someone who has more tolerance for this genre than I like to give it a read and see how it holds up?

These types of online services can also be applauded because of their mentality that printing would be time consuming and would cost the same if the user were to do it on their own or if they paid for online photo developing and delivery.

[CAR-PGa] Punktown: An RPG Setting for Call of Cthulhu® and BRP Gaming

Hi All,

Thought the Punktown RPG Kickstarter was appropriate for this forum (yes, I'm one of the authors): http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...cthulhu-and-br

Punktown is a city created by author Jeffrey Thomas who has written numerous books set there, both novels and short story collections. The stories depict a crazy world where anything and everything goes, but menace lurks in the shadows.

Punktown: An RPG Setting for Call of Cthulhu® and BRP is a book that will allow players of Chaosium's famous award-winning system to explore a dark, futuristic world fraught with untold perils. If you're a cyberpunk fan, if you're a horror fan, or if you're both, you'll want to explore the pages of this book. The book will be written for the famous BRP system, compatible with Call of Cthulhu and Chaosium's many other game settings, so if you're looking to expand your world, and add options, look no further than Punktown!

The book will explore the city itself, the alien races, the weaponry, the creatures, mutations, cybernetics, drugs, sanity (and the inevitable loss thereof), and the option of adding the Cthulhu Mythos into the mix. As written in Jeffrey Thomas' work, the mythos is already there, threatening life as Punktowners know it, but whether or not to use that element is left to the individual gaming groups, and their preference.

Picture Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, Minority Report, Total Recall and the rest of the dark, not-too-distant-future genre. Now add aliens, mutants, and robots. Welcome to Punktown...now gimme your wallet.

[CAR-PGa] RPG's 3 years booming Growth

To provide a purely anecdotal bit of evidence from north Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth):
In the few years following Origins '93 in Fort Worth, GAMA retrenched, abandoning the wandering around the nation each year and settling down in Cincinnati.   This was great for GAMA's bottom line - no more travel expense for the staff, no more "where are they this year?" by the fans, etc.  However, for the advancement of RPG, supposedly what the Game Manufacturers Association is about, it wasn't so good.  In areas where there were major regional cons (Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc.), there wasn't much effect - the big regionals took up the slack.  In other areas, such as the Southwest, it was devastating.  The only con in that region to survive in that period was an anime/cosplay gathering with one small room for RPG, mostly filled by a few computers and unscheduled table-top free play.  Attempts to get a primarily RPG con seemed to flunk out their sophomore or junior year.

A check of the convention schedule in the monthly CAR-PGa Newsletter ($5.00 per year by e-mail - plug) will show this has changed. The region has a few flourishing cons.  One specifically excludes electronics while including board games and miniature wargames.  Another specializes in 1980s style (but including new games of that type) tabletop.  These are hanging in there and growing slowly, but steadily.  They are all small, around a hundred attending, just attracting from a few counties radius, but they are there.  We could use a big convention like we once had every nine years, or even better, a permanent regional one, but RPG is no longer the dead issue it recently was.

On the other hand, there are no longer the defunct retail malls filled with first-person-shooters competitions first-person-shooting each other while the commercial media calls it role-playing games.

[CAR-PGa] Re: RPG's 3 years booming Growth, while Video Games down

My coverage: http://www.examiner.com/article/video-games-sales-down-hobby-games-up-2011

Lots of reasons for this, one of them being the consoles are in their "pre-launch" lull and, due to the economy, are now in a situation where the technology is so expensive to produce a game for the platform that they're having difficulty creating an economic model that will be profitable.

Hmm, need to write another article...

I wrote a follow-up to this article: http://www.examiner.com/article/can-online-role-playing-games-save-your-marriage

And sited my own experiences.

I have a decidedly different viewpoint since I met my wife of 13 years (on November 13) on a MUD.

[CAR-PGa] RPG's 3 years booming Growth, while Video Games down

According to the hobby game industry trade magazine Internal Correspondence,
it is looking like hobby games, including RPG's, are experiencing an across
the board (pardon the pun) booming growth period 3 years running, while video
game sales were down each year in 2010 and 2011 (still waiting on end of 2012
figures).

Re: [CAR-PGa] Re: Online role-playing games hurt marital satisfaction, says BYU study

Paul,

In theory, the most profitable model for MMOs would be something that players would find exciting enough to keep their subscriptions (at about $15 per month) but encourage them to only play about 6 to 8 hours a week.  This way, they would be able to support more players on each game server.  The problem is that it is difficult for the game companies to find  a combination that keeps players interested over a long term, but doesn't cause them to want to play excessively on any given week.

Rick has some good points, but I think the difference between any type of video game - cassette to MMORPG - and tabletop RPG is that the video has only one person (present) and the machine, while TTRPG has more players in one place.  The machine will almost always outlast the player, while tabletop ends (or at least recesses) when one or more of the players gets tired.

I may be more cynical that Rick, but I fear "proven model" is not the only reason the MMO designers don't limit excessive time.  Like any "pusher" of addictive material, there are monetary rewards for not limiting involvement.  Indeed, if it weren't for the built-in limitation with tabletop, I would expect some publishers to do likewise.

Having a grandson addicted to these games (all-night sessions after a half-load college curriculum), I have a particular interest in activities which may not be not healthful.

It seems many people connect via Google Plus, sometimes also using
Google hangout (video chat) for gaming together. But I've no idea
whether this has anything to do with traffic on this list.

Re: [CAR-PGa] Online role-playing games hurt marital satisfaction, says BYU study

A couple of observations...

1) I think that like any hobby, if it is done to excess, MMOs (or even
Paper RPGs) can distract from the rest of your life and work and family
suffer as a result. This would apply equally to someone who was completely
obsessed with Model Trains for example or hangs out at the pool hall every
night and never stays home with the family.

2) As noted in the article, where MMOs are shared by a couple, it can have
a positive impact. Like any activity that the couple does together,
interacting with each other for large periods of time can bring you closer
to your partner and deepen your friendship. Once again, this could be true
for any activity and is not particular or unique to MMOs or RPGs.

3) A lot of MMOs focus on various long term methods of "grinding" to
achieve goals which requires hours and hours of play time. The intent of
the game companies is that it keeps long term interest by forcing the player
to have goals which are achieved gradually over time and not allowing them
to reach the "End" without many many months of effort. The downside of this
is that it adds to the addictiveness and time impact of the MMO so that it
is more likely that other aspects of the player's life are affected. A
player must make a significant time commitment in order to keep up with
online friends.

This negative is not generally present in campaign type RPGs where there is
no pressure to keep up with teammates because you are all constrained to the
same schedule. Although, organized play as done by WotC and Paizo is
beginning to incorporate some of the "grinding" characteristics of MMOs. I
have seen a handful of players who cycle through events at several different
gaming venues each week in order to accelerate leveling their characters.

I think it behooves MMO designers to look for ways to interest players that
don't encourage excessive time commitments in order to encourage a balance
between game time and real life. The problem is that from a business
viewpoint, they have little incentive to diverge from a proven model.

Rick

[CAR-PGa] World of Warcraft Gamer elected as State Senator Despite Attacks by Opposition

http://rpgr.org/blog/maine-state-senator-online-role-playing-gamer-elected

Colleen Lachowicz, Democrat for Maine state senate, won despite attacks
claiming concern over her "fitness for office" due to her online "disturbing
alter ego". These attacks from her opposition were targeting her online gaming
in World of Warcraft...

Lachowicz's opposition made claims about her "disturbing alter ego" in the
game, questioning her "fitness for office".

She reportedly also raised some of her funds from other gamers, and her
opposition tried to block those funds.

Also interesting to note that Marketplace Morning Edition reported her as Orc
"Assassin", instead of Rogue.

Player: Colleen Lachowicz
IRL: State Senate District 25, Maine.
Game: Online Gaming WoW.
Character: Santiaga, Level 85 Orc Rogue.

Mission: Clearly establish through rigorous scientific
testing the causal therapeutic and educational impact
of role-playing gaming on participants.

"Holistic medicine treats the person rather than the disease,
its concern lies with the 'whole person' and with permitting
individuals to assume self-responsibility for their own health.
Whereas illness is the sole concern of 'traditional medicine',
holistic 'well medicine' deals with wellness and health promotion"
