(and nice to see gaming sales increasing), I can see this starting a
few fires. The author does not provide any support this connection of
gaming to unemployment. There is simply no evidence presented that
definitively ties game sales to teenage unemployment.
I am also uncomfortable with the stereotyping the article portrays. It
claims that all gamers are jobless teenagers who game old out of
boredom and poverty. I for one am not jobless, nor a teenager. I'm
also partially offended by the notion that a unemployed college
graduate would take up gaming because s/he is unemployed.
I've spoken with a few shop owners in my area, and they've all said
the same thing. Whenever the economy shifts, people migrate to
activities of more value. A movie costs, if you go with a friend,
about $20 Canadian, and lasts for about an hour and a half. A board
game, for example, costs about twice as much, but is replayable, and
thus seen as having more value. Gaming also does not generally cost
more in relation to the number of players (to a certain point).
I suspect that this upturn in gaming is far more complicated that this
article presents. I'm partial to the value argument, although that
probably isn't the whole story. Roleplaying games (as well as other
kinds of games) are more accessibly now that ever. You can buy some
great games at large book stores, and there seem to be more gaming
stores than ever before. Additionally, recent market trends to create
roleplaying games with simpler and faster moving rules may make them
more appealing. In additional to all of this, The first generation of
gamers is having children (or should I say, their children are coming
of age). Gaming is likely a more common hobby now, as children are
being raised in environments where gaming is acceptable and
encouraged.
While this is an interesting article, I feel that it is missing some
detail. Furthermore, it tries to make quick connections to seemingly
unrelated social factors, like age and employment status. While it is
true that there are many adolescent gamers, there are a number of
additional factors that should be analyzed.
