[CAR-PGa] Confirmed: Writing entire chapter on RPG for 4th edition textbook "Facilitation Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation"

http://www.rpgresearch.com/blog/rpg-chapter-tr-facilitation-book

Wonderful news, I received an email confirming they wish for
me to proceed with writing the entire chapter on using role-playing
games as a facilitation technique for therapeutic recreation!

Writing a full chapter, on Role-Playing Games (All formats: tabletop,
live-action, computer-based, and solo adventure books/modules), in the
upcoming 4th edition textbook "Facilitation Techniques in Therapeutic
Recreation" by Professors Dattilo and McKenney of Penn State!

I hope to have the final drafts completed over this summer. There are
only 2 textbooks on this topic (Facilitation Techniques in TR) available
(the other is from Stumbo), and all Recreational Therapists must cover
this topic as part of their training and working toward NCTRC
certification as CTRS.

As far as I have been able to find researching since 2004, there is
zero literature in the TR profession, beyond what I have created and
disseminated, about any role-playing game format. This will cover all
forms of role-playing games: tabletop, live-action, computer-based, and
solo adventure books & modules. It will focus the most on the tabletop
and LARP modes, but include considerations for using the other 2 modes.

I already wrote a rough draft of this when Dattilo suggested he was
interested after seeing my presentation on RPG & Recreation Therapy at
the Pacific Northwest Therapeutic Recreation Association a year and
half ago (PNWTRA).

Just thought I'd share the great news!

Happy Gaming!

Re: [CAR-PGa] Bits of news

Greetings!

The Adams and I have been in rapport for some years, they have been
using my research and program plans as templates to supplement their own
therapeutic backgrounds.

For some time they have been asking me to come and observe their
program, and 2 weeks ago I was able to make it over there and observe
(and participate) in two of their groups.

They are off to a good start, but have a lot hurdles still to overcome.
Especially documentation, assessment, billable, session length,
facility issues, and trying to bring in help.

After he sessions, we spoke for a few hours, and I gave them feedback
on the 4 pages of notes I wrote about their sessions, and a range of
suggestions that could help them.

It is great they are getting such great press due to their connections
in the Seattle area.

I am currently working on some essays on this topic, including their
program, and will let you know when those are available.
Happy Gaming!

[CAR-PGa] Bits of news

A short report from DICE Summit, of all places—it's a video game executives conference—that talks about efforts towards gender parity in the tabletop industry: http://greenronin.com/blog/2017/03/27/ronin-roundtable-musings-on-women-games-and-the-tabletop-industry/

The above report links to a video of the keynote presentation on what video games and tabletop can learn from each other: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4vLd9cZW2o

It also links to a book on women in the tabletop industry, with chapters from various contributors. (At least one is writing from an RPG perspective.) https://www.amazon.com/Girls-Games-Fairer-Tabletop-Industry/dp/1939066204

PDFs of the two articles are attached as usual.
