[CAR-PGa] Old attack (1992)

Someone's dug up video of an attack on D&D by Win Worley, pastor at the Hegewisch Baptist Church in Highland, Indiana, in 1992.

[CAR-PGa] Re: [TV commercial] ridiculing LARPs {an item for the next newsletter}

Just saw this Ted, great timing!

So mad about this that I'm writing an article right now!

I don't know if it was ESPN or some other sports channel but I'm sure it was a sports channel.

[CAR-PGa] Re: [new research project] RPG books in public libraries

Hi Ted,

Sorry I missed this.  Was just at the Fairfield library, but didn't have time to dig through the aisles.  Here's what's there: https://fair.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/default/search/results?qu=dungeons+dragons&te=

5E D&D and reprints of AD&D, go figure.

Hope that's helpful!

So, for this research project, I'm asking everyone reading this message to check your local public library and see what they have. Search for anything related to RPGs. Then, reply right here in this thread. Depending on your library system, you may be able to search their catalog online from home. Let's set the deadline as 24 July 2017.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Re: [CAR-PGa] Re: [new research project] RPG books in public libraries

I am moving between countries now, and in Brazil usually the municipalities libraries catalogs aren't  online, so sorry. I am sure they must have something like old D&D or GURPS in my current city, but I had no time to go downtown yet, and I am not sure if I will be able to.

In Japan people play in "clubs", usually at High Schools,Universities and community centers, because of the lack of space. So I really do not know if we can find TRPGs at libraries in Japan, maybe old "replays" (Books that consist of TRPG sessions transcriptions).

Isn't it better to launch an online survey about this? And didn't Wizards of the Coast had a program for libraries a couple of years ago?

All the best for you guys.

[CAR-PGa] university-level game design class

I work at the Georgia Institute of Technology. To be specific, I work in the Department of Professional Education. More than a year ago the department created an online course called Game On: Principles of Game Design. I was near the studio when they were making the videos. I saw a copy of Gamma World 1st edition, some D&D 3.5 books and the classic board game Civilization. There were some other games , as well.

If you go to the department website (pe.gatech.edu) you can do a search of the course name and get some details.

[CAR-PGa] Paul Cardwell

I meant to do this awhile ago and never did.

I just wanted to thank Paul for being Chair for so many years and keeping it afloat for so long. He saw us through some contentious times. He deserves the gratitude of the entire group.

[CAR-PGa] Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix (ARC)

I obtained an ARC (Advance Reading Copy) of Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix and noticed several sections that discussed the Satanic Panic, including a two-page spread on Mazes and Monsters and its imitators. I am attaching a scan of related pages. It is all quite in our favor with the possible exception of the linking of Silence of the Lambs with the spike in FBI "serial killer" statistics, which is noted without any argument for exactly what happened there. (It doesn't claim that the books caused serial killers; the phrasing suggests to me that the FBI started classifying more cases as serial killers after they had entered the public consciousness, but this isn't made explicit.)

Because this is an ARC, the text is subject to change before final publication. Indeed, there were a number of "TK"s in the text, noting places that content needed filling in. I would encourage someone to grab a copy when it comes out, go through it more carefully, and update these scans.
