[CAR-PGa] Re: Read an RPG Book in Public Week 2011 Starts on Sunday!

Wrote an article supporting the event:
http://www.examiner.com/rpg-in-national/read-an-rpg-book-public-begins-this-week-readrpgs

There's some ugly buzz on RPG forums that basically amount to "reading
RPGs in public is dumb" so I felt I had to refute the point. This is
as much about advocacy and bringing new players into the fold as it is
about the act of reading a RPG book itself.

[CAR-PGa] Re: D&D represents threat to prison security

My comment to Mike Stackpole and Mike's reply regarding game defense
are both visible on his website now. Here's the link for those who
have lost track: http://www.michaelastackpole.com/?p=2220 I'm going to
try to continue the conversation in a more conciliatory tone--I was
feeling rather frustrated when I wrote my original comment--and
suggest we try to work together better in the future.

On a side note, the Tucson - gaming connection he refers to appears to
be this article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703791904576075851892478080.html
It's mainly focused on what he wrote on an online game's forums and
how others read them at the time, but it does refer to his online
gaming experience as including "Starcraft and Diablo, which featured
complex virtual worlds where players assume roles and play against
other people around the globe" &c. It makes no attempt to portray the
games as anything other than a symptom of his social isolation, if
that, but that doesn't mean that later references back to the article
share the same view.

[CAR-PGa] Help New Zealand

Thanks for the channel to help the residents in Christchurch.  The note was timed perfectly as it will be posted on both the discussion list and the March Newsletter.

CAR-PGa once had a member in Christchurch, who suddenly disappeared without a trace.  Trying to find him, I went to the Dallas Public Library which had a whole room of phone directories at that time.  He wasn't in the Christchurch directory, but the back cover was interesting.  It contained instructions for what to do in case of: earthquake, wildfire, tsunami, volcanic eruption, and cyclone.  But otherwise seemed a nice little city.

A 7.1 in September and now a 6.3, both with an extreme number of aftershocks in the 4. something range, has hit the place hard.  No fatalities in the first, but structural weakening from it showed up in the second.  With over a hundred still missing, the death toll is not yet known, but will be high.  Already injuries have overwhelmed the facilities.

Don't forget - the first Read an RPG Book in Public Week</a> of 2011
starts this Sunday!*

What is Read an RPG Book in Public Week, you may ask? It's a thrice-

and October 1st, where roleplayers are encouraged to take their
favorite roleplaying rulebooks, modules, supplements, and splatbooks
with them when they leave the house and read them in public. The
purpose is to make the hobby more visible, promote inquiry and
conversation about the hobby, and maybe even attract some new players
or bring back some of the lapsed ones.

To find out more about Read an RPG Book in Public Week, visit the
official page at theescapist.com/readrpgsinpublic

I'm going to be particularly busy this upcoming week - I am involved
in two different plays at my local theatre - but I will be checking in

them coming!

[CAR-PGa] Help New Zealand with DriveThruRPG

(Cut and pasted from The Escapist Blog - www.theescapist.com/blog)

DriveThruRPG has once again organized a humanitarian effort for people
in great need, this time for the victims of the New Zealand
earthquake. For a donation of $20, which will go directly to the Red
Cross relief efforts in New Zealand, DTRPG is offering over $330 worth
of great RPG PDFs, including Al Shir-Ma, Book of Knights, Ingenium,
and Cthulhu Tech. If you would like to donate, visit DriveThruRPG's
New Zealand Red Cross Earthquake Relief page (http://
rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?
products_id=88713&affiliate_id=18458
) - or to donate directly to the
Red Cross, visit their New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal
page.(http://www.redcross.org.nz/cms_display.php)

This isn't the first time DTRPG has used this method to raise funds
for a worthy cause. In early 2010, the site organized a similar
package to benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquake, and also
implemented a donation matching program. Together, these programs
raised over $175,000 for Doctors Without Borders!

I mentioned this back then, and I seem to bring it up every time that
any group of roleplayers are involved in such activity, but it really
bears repeating - To William Schnoebelen and anyone else who asks
things like "where are the rescue missions ... started by D&D
gamers?", here is yet another example for you. Feel free to ignore it,
as you must if you want to uphold your illusion of gamers as twisted,
violent, and dangerous, but the fact remains that gamers are just as
kind, thoughtful, and generous as any other group of people - not
because they are gamers, but because they are human beings.

per cent in its net profit at Rs 256.19 crore for the third quarter
ended December 31, 2010.
It had a net profit of Rs 205.74 crore during the same period of last
fiscal.

Inflationary expectations & tight liquidity adversely impacted the NIM
(Net Interest Margin) which leads to fall in this stock price. The
concern negative points appears to be unfreeze & correction in the
stock overdone. Syndicate loan books expected to grow by 20%. Thus the
stock looks attractive investment opportunity.

Since its 52 week high of Rs 164 has been declining in a well defined
channel lows and highs. At its current low of Rs 102, the stock has
underperformed Sensex & Bankex & the close to its book level.

We think the stock is cheap at 1.4x estimated FY12 book value. Thus
studying all the aspect we recommend a strong BUY with the target 195

BUY Lupin Headquartered in Mumbai, India, Lupin Limited today is an
innovation led transnational pharmaceutical company producing a wide
range of quality, affordable generic and branded formulations and APIs
for over 70 countries in the world. Lupin remains amongst the prolific
R& D spenders in the industry which we believe bodes well for its
growth.

Lupin reported net sales for the Q3FY2011 increased by 16.9% to Rs
14,672 million with domestic formulation business continued to show
strong growth and on back of traction across Europe, South Africa and
API segments.

Intact growth in FY 2011-12 in the sector due to 1)Visibility increase
in launches in US. 2)OCs launch from Sep 2012E.3) Minimal threat of
generic competition to Suprax.

We believe the recent fall in stock is a good opportunity point as
long term drivers are intact.
We recommend 'BUY' on the stock with a target price of Rs510 valuing
it at 20x FY2012E earnings.

BUY AREVA T&D India Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of AREVA France SA ,

The comply of Areva T&D India's business at global level by the

Although the signs of recovery are emerging, the stock is currently
trading at lower valuation that contradict the fundamental.

Building on the strong operating performance with relatively low
interest and depreciation cost as proportion to sales and lower tax
incidence , we expect company to register CAGR of 13.5% respectively.

SELL BAJAJ AUTO : Bajaj Auto Ltd, the 2nd largest manufacturer of two-
wheelers in India, reported less growth compared to its peers and its
production constrains, decreasing brand image , market acceptance,
detoriating quality & inability to achieve target sale stock looks
struggling. Bajaj is losing its ground by decreasing market share. 4
years back, it enjoyed market share of more than 35 % in India and
currently its market share is mere 17.5 % and further on a fall. Bajaj
Auto recorded a fall of 25% in its total sales in December 2010
compare to October 2010. This is further expected to fall.
Strong players like Hero Honda, Honda, TVS, Suzuki and newly
introduced Mahindra in two wheelers and Piaggio, TVS, Mahindra in
three wheelers are giving tough competition to Bajaj. The split of
Hero & Honda will negatively impact Bajaj. Hero is expanding in
exports as well. Fierce competition, OPM pressure , increasing input
cost and interest rate are weakening Bajaj Auto. Thus we recommend a
Strong SELL on Bajaj Auto at 1300 targeting to half of its current
price within 6-9 months.

Kamanwala Housing construction article in Times of india and Mumbai Mirror

Filmistan sold for 600 crore?

It's lights off at one of Mumbai's oldest studios which has been
purchased by a city-based developer, say realty sources

This could be the end of an era in filmmaking. Sixtyyear-old
Filmistan – one of Mumbai's oldest studios – will cease to exist. Its
owners Kamanwala Housing Constructions Limited (KHCL) and Aspen
Properties are close to finalising a deal with a city-based real
estate developer to sell the property, spread over seven acres in
Goregaon (West), for around Rs 600 crore, according to market
sources.
The property was on the block for over 10 months, sources said.
KHCL director Atul Jain initially said, "No deal has been signed."
When pressed further, he admitted, "We are looking at selling the
property. It will be sold by both parties (KHCL and Aspen)."
Asked if movie shootings will cease to exist once the property
exchanges hands, Jain said, "That is obvious. What kind of development
will take place – residential or commercial –hasn't been decided."
One of the speculated buyers is Oberoi Constructions. The company's
managing director, Vikas Oberoi did not answer phone calls or revert
to text messages. It is not clear whether current owners will retain a
small stake in the project. Experts peg the developable area around 7
lakh sq ft. A timeline for development is not known, even as many big
budget films and a reality show continue to be filmed at the studio.

[CAR-PGa] My review of Vampire Clan

Hi All,

Just wanted to share my review of Vampire Clan, which was based on the
"Vampire Clan Murders" from awhile ago. I stumbled on the movie
entirely by accident, thought it was a low-budget vampire film -- but
the premise sounded familiar. Sure enough it's a retelling of the
supposedly role-playing influenced murders.

Good news: there's not one reference to RPGs in the entire film.

In the review, I link back to the Escapist archive of the Interactive
Literature Foundation's statement about the murders.

[CAR-PGa] archeology

Scientific American online
Games
In the study of a major city in ancient Pakistan, one of every 10 finds is related to playing games.
Cynthia Graber reports
February 9, 2011

Many of us have plenty of leisure time to devote to trying out the latest Wii game or even watching
others play poker on TV. But this focus on play is nothing new, says a researcher at Sweden's
University of Gothenburg.

For her doctoral thesis, Elke Rogersdotter studied a 4,000-year-old city called Mohenjo-Daro in the
Indus Valley, in what is now Pakistan. ["Gaming in Mohenjo-daro—an Archaeology of Unities"] It was
the largest Bronze Age urban settlement in the region, thriving at the same time as the ancient
Egyptian Middle Kingdom.

Play is not generally studied for its significance to ancient peoples. Rogersdotter says that
archaeologists do often find game-related relics at dig sites, but they're usually discounted as
unimportant or considered a ritual object. But at this site, almost every tenth find was related to
leisure—dice or gaming pieces.

And they're not uniformly scattered. The artifacts are clustered together in what might have been
ancient, say, gaming halls or courtyards. Rogersdotter says that these games may have had real
social significance and might be used to give us a better view of the lives of these Bronze Age
individuals. Who very well might have hoped to roll double-sixes four millennia ago.

I recorded it on a VHS tape(yeah, yeah, stop laughing) but I missed
the first five or so minutes. If anyone is able to somehow get a
complete recording on DVD, please send it to the Chair.

Re: Legislators RPG simple survey 1 draft, was Re: [CAR-PGa] Survey of State & Federal congresses?

Looks pretty solid to me. I can't think of anything I'd change. I'm
eager to see the results!

[CAR-PGa] "I attack them, using my... additional notes!" (or, a short review of Community's D&D episode)

(Cut and pasted from The Escapist Blog - www.theescapist.com/blog)

Last night's D&D-themed episode of Community> was excellent, in your
humble host's opinion. It doesn't quite beat out the final episode of
Freaks and Geeks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXvcezqnG5w) for best
gaming-themed episode ever, but I would call it a close second.

In it, students at a community college team up to help get one of
their group out of his emotional funk by playing a game of Advanced
Dungeons & Dragons with him. There are a few jabs at the geekiness of
the game, but nothing unfair or out of line, and everyone in the group
ends up getting into their roles and generally enjoying themselves. A
lot of the humor was based around inexperienced players trying to get
a grip on the rules of the game (such as the title of this post,
uttered by one of them as he tried to find something on his character
sheet to defend himself from a horde of goblins).

Sure, there were inaccuracies. For some reason, only the DM was
allowed to use the dice, and unless my bad eyes were deceiving me, he
rolled the d12 for most everything. Likewise, there was a "seduction
scene" when the party had to convince an elven princess to let them
borrow her pegasus (for some reason, non-gamers always want to inject
the other type of popular "role-playing" into the hobby). But other
than these, the episode gave a pretty clear picture of how the game is
played, showed a diverse group of people enjoying themselves with it,
and even used it as a vehicle to help one of their friends with a
problem.

Not unlike the aforementioned Freaks and Geeks episode, this one ends
with the suggestion that they play again someday, which is the best
way to wrap it up, I say.

Did you miss it, or want to see it again? Watch it here on nbc.com -

data as other studies have done in the past.

Re: [CAR-PGa] D&D represents threat to prison security

I tried a copy-and-paste to use Mike's comment icon, but clicking it had no effect in even opening a link with Mike.

Even though your posting was in January, it missed the deadline for the February Newsletter summary.  The long tradition is that the Newsletter deadline "is the mail delivery on the last day of the month" which can be anywhere between 1:00 and 3:30 pm Central whatever time.  It will be listed in the March issue.

Of course, with the discussion, the posting is important, but I thought I should explain it for major items such as Newsletter articles, convention lists, and such.  Thanks to all participants for their help.

Paul,

There is an option to leave comments after the blog entries.  I have no
idea how often Michael reads them though.
