[CAR-PGa] Tucson Weekly’s Nostalgia = Classic D&D Paranoia

(Cut and pasted from The Escapist Blog - www.theescapist.com/blog )

The Tucson Weekly's Nostalgia feature brings back a cover story from
25 years ago - "Dungeons & Dragons: Playing With Fire?"

"Many of the fantasy and role-playing games are smack in the middle of
the occult, and that's the truth," says Jack Gracie. Gracie is the
spokesman for Tucson's Christian Awareness Fellowship, a "non-profit
interdenominational Christian group primarily devoted to educating the
body of Christ concerning the cults and the occult."

"In these games, kids are taught how to invoke demons and thinks like
that. And now it has gone beyond a game."

Sadly, they don't reprint the entire article, so we don't know how
balanced the story is. But given the time period, I think we could
make an educated guess. If anyone has a copy of the full story, please
let me know.

Full article is here -

Don't loose Traffic and SEO because of Bad Links

Have you ever visited a website, but typed in the wrong
url after the domain name? What did you see?

Chances are you saw a generic page that said something
like, "The page cannot be displayed," or "Not Found,"
or "The requested URL was not found on this server."

This is what is more commonly known as the 404 Error
Page. It's the page that shows up by default when
someone 'accidentally' types in the address of the page
they are looking for on your site incorrectly. Why, not capitalize on
it whether they are doing it
purposely or they are truly ending up there by accident. Here's to
making good use of every page on your website. http://bit.ly/lPdksW

Re: [CAR-PGa] Breyer dissent

Given the easy access to the internet that most children have through a huge variety of conduits, parents would be wise to accept that current legislation will do little to keep pornography out of their children's hands if they choose to seek it out.

As always, communication with and monitoring of your children will do more than any legislation.

While the corporate media is ignoring the implication of Justice Breyer's dissent in the video game case, the "underground" (online) media is not.  An excellent article on this by Sarah Jaffe is on today's (29 Je 2011) AlterNet.  Get it while it's hot, these articles don't stay up long and it is often difficult to recover them after a week or so.

Like Breyer and Jaffe, just for the record, I am not advocating porn, although the Supreme Court decisions have so far held that porn must be sexual and nudity in anthropology (and our games) is not otherwise pornography.

[CAR-PGa] Supreme Court decision

Re: Rick's posting:

"With all due respect", I don't see where we disagree.

My posting was to point out the Breyer dissent, because the corporate media won't.  He raised some questions regarding the double standard that torture is OK for kids to play, but nudity must still be banned, whether in a sexual context or not.  This is directly opposite to the views of most Eurokpean countries and was never addressed by any of the majority opinions.  (We can ignore Thomas' dissent that minors have no rights at all because it is obvious that he believes only those who give him, personally or through his wife, very big bucks, have any rights at all.)

I remember a debate I had a decade or so ago, over the "pin-up" portrayal of females in Dragon and other game resources.  I was arguing that the original barbarians (according to the Greeks who coined the word) were Scythians, who generally had only hands and face exposed - it is cold on the steppes of central Asia!  Then I realized that my two female characters didn't wear any clothes at all!  They were a kosag (Lucasfilms wouldn't let me use wookie) and a faun.  Since then I have played other females, all of whom wore clothes and only some were human.

This is a game issue and we should be prepared to deal with it.

[CAR-PGa] Would you like to be in a documentary about Dungeons & Dragons?

Anthony Savini and producing partner, Andrew Pascal, are currently
starting production to create the definitive documentary on Dungeons &
Dragons.

Their premise is manifold. They hope to cover an ambitious array of
topics from Gary Gygax and the history of the game to the psychology
behind the escapism to the influence of D&D and RPG in today's world
among others.

Andrew and Anthony have been film-makers for the past 15 years, eking
out a living working on the production end of the business. Andrew
wrote and directed a feature film called, "Spin the Bottle" back in
the late 90's and also currently putting together a production company
to create and produce not an assortment of other projects. Anthony has
a long history of working with legendary documentarians such as Ken &
Rick Burns and Academy-Award winning, Bill Guttentag. He has also
written and directed several narrative and commercial works. They are
also gamers.

They reached out to me, but I felt that to get the true scope of
gaming experience and hopefully get it right, we should draw on the
depth and breadth of this formidable group.

If you're interested in contributing to the documentary, please let me
know: talien@toast.net.

Re: [CAR-PGa] Suplreme Court decision

Paul,

With all due respect, the US Army uses video games as recruiting and training tools because they are effective methods in a society where most kids spend a lot of time during their teenage years playing video games.

Don't confuse correlation with causation. As the volume of video game sales has risen in the US, in many areas, crime and violence has decreased per capita.  I'm not necessarily saying there is a connection, but there is a correlation.  Maybe kids are staying home and playing games instead of hanging out with nothing to do and ending up causing trouble?   I honestly have no idea.

I think the Supreme Court decision reinforces that parents must be responsible for monitoring their children and determining what is appropriate for them and I support that.  I don't want some politician who may be pandering to a special interest group making broad decisions about what my children can or can't do based on an arbitrary standard.

Imagine a state government restricting RPGs to adults only because they may contain adult themes.  The original AD&D books contained depictions of nudity and descriptions of demons and devils which were based on real mythology.  If some overzealous state government had restricted them to adults only, my teenage years would certainly have changed for the worse.

Truly bad cases make bad law.  I do not agree that video games resemble RPG in any significant way other than the same charges against video have been used against RPG.  Granted, a specific cause and effect cannot be proved in either case, but one must ask if there is no effect, why does the US military use video simulations as a training, and even first-person shooters as a recruiting device?

I don't agree with Thomas' "reasoning" - that minors have no rights.  However, I note the majority did not answer Breyer's dissent which asks a more important question of why minors should be permitted to participate in rape and murder on a video screen, but by law must never view the unadorned human body in a non-sexual context.

BAU KANDANG, BAU KOTORAN HILANG DENGAN PRODUK PENGHILANG BAU ORGANIK PROTEXOL| http://DOKTERTERNAK.COM

Sabtu 4 Juni 2011 pukul 08.30 diberangkatkan paket Protexol sebanyak
10 jerigen via Herona Ekpress menuju Bandung. Kembali, peternak handal
dari bumi Sangkuriang, Pak Agung Supriyadi, memesan Protexol. Kali ini
pesanannya tidak hanya untuk farmnya sendiri. Pak Agung mengatakan

Satu kali
penyemprotan larutan PROTEXOL terbukti mampu mengurangi bau amonia
kotoran ayam sampai 90% selama 5 hari seperti yang telah diterapkan di
Sumber Rejeki Farm, Sukapura, Probolinggo, Jawa Timur. Berdasarkan
penuturan Bapak Puji Suyoto (alumnus Universitas Soedirman) selaku
manager farm, baru pada hari ke-6 dirasakan muncul bau lagi akibat
akumulasi kotoran baru sehingga penyemprotan perlu diulangi.

Go
Environmentally Friendly Farming !

Re: [CAR-PGa] Re: Update from Canada

I replied to Bryan's posting off line.  Since he is sharing it online with no context among the readers (quite proper, but confusing), I thought I better post my comment to reduce that confusion.

Message body

Nice card design.  Traditionally, we used a D12, because like that die, we are rare.  (This goes back to even before I was a member, which was in the late 1980s.)  Also, numbers are preferable to pips as it gets around the "promotes gambling" charge which amazingly still exists - in every US state prison!  I still can't get them to provide the rules for Craps with D20s, but then it is nothing but a power play on their part and rationality plays no part in it.  Federal prisons either have no problem with dice (as long as they are Armory!), or they ban dice but permit the games, requiring the default use of spinners.

It is interesting that TSR threatened to sue (as they did habitually back in those days) over our D12 use, claiming it infringed on their RPGA world map on an icosohedron, even though we had eight fewer sides and no map.  Ironically, a world map on an icosohedron is the copyrighted property of Buckminster Fuller and is called a Dymaxion Globe.  They ignore that detail.

Also, good ideas on the Fact Checker.

I had a hard drive death on my old computer which permitted the use of PageMaker 5 word processing.  So I am way behind on getting things transfered to my Mini Leopard.  This is another reason to have hardcopy archives!  Very little, if any, archival material was lost, although a lot of "current project" material exists only on floppy disc backup.  This includes ongoing material like the Media Bias Study and my Role-Playing Game Dictionary, which covers lexigraphic materials such as etymology and date of first use as well as mere definitions.  It will be awhile before I am back up to date, but still available for work on the backup data.

BEST BUY- RURAL ELECTRIC CORPORATION (REC)

Following the rumors that media has spread about REC, its Finance
Director HD Khunteta have cleared up Tamil Nadu issue's rumors in the
following interview to CNBC.
Tamil Nadu electricity board is a Government entity and the Government
will take the responsibility to pay REC the due amount if the board
fails. In no ways will the Tamil Nadu board be defaulted by REC. REC
is receiving regular interest on due date by the board. Please read
the following interview of HD Khunteta ,taken by CNBC on 20th June,
2011.
Q: Your investors are understandably worried about the Rs 11,000 crore
exposure that you have to the Tamil Nadu power utility, how do you see
things panning out there, given their call for restructuring?
A: Out of the Rs 11,000 crore of loan, Rs 3000 crore to the joint
venture where turnover is, and NTPC have the joint venture and
projects are under construction, so the projects are likely to come
after two years and interest in the part of that overall purchase
growth so I don't think there is any worry. Tamil Nadu board's
outstanding amount stands around Rs 8000 crore and it is a part of the
government department.
So, I feel that the state utility cannot afford to default. In case
they default to the NTPC, REC or PFC , then either they can get some
money since power cannot be purchased from the NTPC. So I am hopeful
that their financial position is not good since last 5-6 years also.
And they are making underperson payment on the due date. So I am
hopeful that such recession will not arise.
Q: Is it accurate though that the Tamil Nadu exposure is 14% of your
outstanding loans and have you at this point made any provisioning at
all for these loans?
A: No provisioning has been made, because they have not defaulted and
the amount due is from the electricity board which is the part of the
government under the provisions of the 2003 act. If any subsidy is
been given on the advice of the state government, then they have to
make the payment in cash.
Moreover, in case any short fall in the revenue and the company chart
has to be financed by the government department, then I am hopeful
that the state government will make the payment of the subsidy and
certain parts of that. Meanwhile, some portion will come through the
increase in the tariff. So situation of a default may not arise and so
far they have not defaulted on any of the loans.
Q: While defaults may not happen, but the fear is of some kind of
restructuring in which case interest rates might be brought down, etc.
Do you think that is a possibility and if that happens how much you
would stand to lose?
A: I don't think that the interest rates may be restructured. The
maximum possibility may be the tenure from 10 year may increase to 13
years from 14 years. But the deduction in interest rates is not
possibility because we have borrowed the money from the market and the
interest is being charged based on the market rates.
So, element of any additional profit or the money has been taken from
the government at a subsidised rate and we are charging the high rate
of interest, so that is not the case as far as the loan given to the
Tamil Nadu electricity is concerned. So I don't think that there may
be any impact on account of interest.
Q: Is it possible though since the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is
quite stressed for capital that they ask for and get some kind of
moratorium for a period of time which would also be negative for you?
A: So far they have not requested. And they are making the payments on
due date. So no request has been received by REC. So, it is a
hypothetical question and most likely suspicion should not arise and
government will honor their commitments.

So,we believe the recent fall in stock is a good opportunity point as
long term drivers are intact.
We recommend 'BUY' on the stock at CMP 183 with a target price of Rs.
300..

[CAR-PGa] Re: The RPG Fact Checker

I hope you are still taking suggestions. I had a flip through
(finally), and here are some thoughts.

Overall, it looks really good. You've tried to explain some of the
details of tabletop gaming that are usually overlooked. It's fairly
short and easy to digest.

Here are some additions or changes I would like to suggest, with the
section headers.

A roleplaying game is a form of collaborative storytelling.
The word "conflict." This is very negative, and if taken out of
context, could imply that all roleplaying games are violent. Something
like "resolve events" might work better.
The phrase "hit opponent." This also sets a negative tone, even with
the other more neutral expressions close by. Maybe say something like
"resolve injuries."

RPGs are played around a table, or in some other comfortable place,
usually indoors.
I would suggest removing the word "whack," as it is a little
unprofessional. The word "attack" might work here.

Roleplaying games do not normally use cards. & Roleplaying games are
not board games.
These sections are good, but needs some explanation about what CCG
and board games are and why roleplaying games aren't them (maybe touch
on winner-loser, usually direct conflict between players, and
investment and gambling undertones for CCG's like MTG's ante).

The frequently heard statement that "A game does not end...
You should mention that it is equally common, if not more common, for
a game to end within a few weeks of play. This presents a less
dualistic portrayal of roleplaying games than the extremes of one-shot
or years of play.

Roleplaying games are not as complex as is commonly believed.
It is worth mentioning that while roleplaying games are often far
more technical than most board games, the rules are often fairly
straight forward and complimentary to one another. You kind of said
this, but I felt that is was not very clear. You could also mention
that many books also contain setting material, which can take up a
great deal of the book.

Roleplaying games are still very popular...
You should try to actively mentioning other games or keep it game
neutral, as it seems like D&D is the only one still in print.

History of the hobby
This section needs more material. Additions could include mentioning
HG Wells' Little Wars (as early influence), the actual release of D&D
(and some other lasting games), recent digital publishing trends, the
recent trend in games to be more simple and faster to play, and maybe
the start of free RPG Day. I can help with some of this if you'd like.

Most gamers do not live in their parent's basements...
This is a bit sassy. It might be better to simply mention that many
gamers have meaningful relationships and children.

Cultural References
ET: It wasn't actually D&D (licensing reasons). It is best to just
mention that they were playing an unnamed roleplaying game.
Additionally, you could also mention Cloak and Dagger, although this
could be damaging if the movie is taken out of context (the kid's
craziness is an idealized image of his otherwise absent father, and
the spy game he's playing is a symbol of his coming of age and loss of
innocence; this movie is screwed up).

Lastly, it might be worth mentioning that roleplaying games are not
unique to North America. Japan seems to have a thriving market for
roleplaying games (with new games coming out frequently by a few
strong companies), and Europe also seems to do well. As an interesting
aside, Japanese games seem to focus more on one-shots, as it is
inappropriate to have company in one's house for the lengths of times
that we do as gamers in North America.

As I mentioned, the article looks great. These suggestions are just a
minor shift in language (plus a more full history section).

[CAR-PGa] Re: Remnants of Satanic Panic

Thanks for sharing this. It is indeed shocking to see this kind of
thing taking place. Fortunately, things seem to be pretty tame in
Canada. The only instances of upset parents I've experienced were
mostly due to a previously introverted teen suddenly being out all
night (more a concern of drugs or alcohol than gaming itself).

I looked through the first few pages. There were a number of very good
responses. A number of posters mentioned sitting down with the parent
and asking what was found objectionable, what is ok, and otherwise
trying to educate the parent.

Another few posters mentioned that the parent was lawful in her
actions, and that minors in some states cannot legally own things
(even those bought with their own money). I'd like to get this fact
checked (both in Canada and the US).

These two highlights would be good to incorporate in the website
somewhere. Even if the damage is done, having a calm line of
questioning and conflict resolution could help diffuse future
situations like this.

[CAR-PGa] Update from Canada

Hello everyone. My apologies for my absence. I needed to step back
until I finished school.

In my absence, however, I have been up to a few things. First off, I
worked on a test for a business card. I'm doing some traveling in a
few weeks, and would like to have some cards on me for some possible
recruitment. I think it's important that we start branding ourselves,
so I also made up a possible logo for the organization (as I could not
find one).
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150643168360234.690845.604895233#!/photo.php?fbid=10150643169000234&set=a.10150643168360234.690845.604895233&type=1&theater
Please ignore the picture quality (JPEG is a terrible format). I have
a master template in Adobe InDesign that I can edit, and it has a
fairly high quality output. Please let me know what you think, as I
would like to get some of these printed for my trip.

I started writing an article on some game management theories that
I've been thinking about. Basically, the article is an adaptation of
the Buddhism Bodhisattva Precepts. I'm doing this for a few reasons.
One concern among North American Buddhists is how one can apply what
they practice into their daily lives. Another reason came from a
number of discussions with a game designer I lived with while I was in
Japan. We often talked about concerns that came up in game, such as
killing and looting. Anyways, this article will be a set of
philosophical guidelines for in and out of game matters. For example,
not taking what is not given to you touch on respect for fellow
players and not wasting time. This will make a little more sense when
I finish and share the article.

Recently, there were two very interesting threads on RPG.net that I
was following (I can dig up links if folks want).

One thread concerned itself with age dynamics in groups. The
discussion was one of appropriateness and willingness to play with
younger players. I did nit get a chance to formulate a meaningful
response, but the general trend of the thread and some of my thoughts
are:
-Players in their teens may not terribly picky as to who they play
with. I see this all the time in stores, as teens are introduced to
games by adults.
-When players reach their 20's, they are openly hostile towards
younger players. There are a number of reasons for this. First off, by
around age 20, everything is one's life is turned upside down as
friends move away for school or work. In this period, young adults
want to associate with their peers, and may struggle to retain
relationships with childhood friends. I see this at school all the
time, when High School friends pretty much stop talking to each other
within days of starting university.
-When players hit their 30's, there is a shift in attitude. A player
probably finds a new group to play with, and starts thinking about
their hobby. During this period, players start to settle down, get
families and careers, and become less picky about who they play with.
-Players in their 40's or older seem to be not at all concerned with
playing with those younger than them. There is a passing of the torch
at this point, as older players try to keep their hobby alive with
younger players. While younger age groups are opposed to associating
with those younger than them (claiming maturity and even concern over
becoming a social pariah), older players are no longer concerned with
this.

The other thread I was following was about the preamble in gaming
books. It was a discussion as to whether or not the "What is a
roleplaying game" sections common in books are useful, and if
something more helpful could be used instead. I did respond to this
thread, sharing some details from Japanese games. I mentioned that
Maid (the first translated RPG from Japan) contains a number of
scripted exchanges explaining rules and providing examples of play. As
games become less straight forward, I feel that this approach would
not only help new players by actively showing them what games are like
instead of passively telling them about it, but could also be useful
for experienced players who are trying to buy into a new product.

I will be completing my degree shortly, and recently learned that, as
an Alumnus, I may still have access to the research databases
subscribed to my my school. So that's kind of awesome.

In other news, I've been slowly building up my collection of important
or historical gaming books. I recently acquired Laserburn (a combat
resolution system for roleplaying games ca. 1980, and later influenced
the Warhammer 40,000 miniature game), and a digital reprint of Little
Wars (a miniature game written by HG Wells ca. 1913 or so). I also
purchased GURPS Cyberpunk (the whole Secret Services thing) in a
charity auction for the Blackburn family following the death of their
daughter (thanks again to whoever put the book up for auction). These
join my copy of Sword World (the first Japanese roleplaying game) and
Maid (the first translated roleplaying game from Japan), and a few
other older treasures.

In the coming year, I am hoping to do a bit of recruitment in Canada,
get some local research started, continue work with Alan (and Paul) on
the CAR-PGa archive, and maybe work on some more branding.

increase in launches in US. 2) OCs launch from Sep 2012E.3) Minimal
threat of generic competition to Suprax.

We believe the recent fall in stock is a good opportunity point as
long term drivers are intact.
We recommend 'BUY' on the stock at CMP 430 with a target price of Rs.
510... Valuing it at 20x FY2012E earnings.

BUY RURAL ELECTRIFICATION CORPORATION LIMITED (REC)
CMP: 205; Target: 300

At the time of announcing Q4 results, the board of directors of the
company recommended a final dividend of Rs 4 per share for the year
ended March 2011
For 2011-12, we expect REC's loan growth to stabilize around 25 per
cent, led by slowing disbursements and higher competition. Its
disbursements are estimated to grow by 20 per cent, with some cushion
from undisbursed loans of over Rs.100,000 crore.
We have a 'BUY' rating on the stock at CMP of 202 due to REC's robust
long-term business outlook and valuations. Also to post compounded
earnings growth of 25 per cent and average return on equity (RoE) of
22 per cent over 2011-12.

BUY SYNDICATE BANK
CMP: 110; Target: 160

2,08,476 crore. Global deposit reached to Rs.1,35,596 crore while
advances reached to Rs.1,08,350 crore as on 31.03.2011.
Inflationary expectations & tight liquidity adversely impacted the
NIM (Net Interest Margin) which leads to fall in this stock price. The
concern negative points appears to be unfreeze & correction in the
stock overdone. Syndicate loan books expected to grow by 20%. Thus the
stock looks attractive investment opportunity.
Since its 52 week high of Rs.164 has been declining in a well defined
channel lows and highs. At its current low of Rs.113, the stock has
underperformed Sensex & Bankex & the close to its book level.
We think the stock is cheap at 1.4x estimated FY12 book value. Thus
studying all the aspect we recommend a strong BUY with the target 160

BUY AREVA T&D

Although the signs of recovery are emerging, the stock is currently
trading at lower valuations that contradict the fundamental.
Building on the strong operating performance with relatively low

incidence, we expect company to register CAGR of 13.5% respectively.
We expect the stock perform dominant in earning at CMP 265 with a
target price of 440.

SELL BAJAJ AUTO
CMP : 1300; Target : 1100
BAL, the 2nd largest manufacturer of two-wheelers in India, reported
less growth compared to its peers, with production constraints,
diminishing brand image and market acceptance, coupled with
detoriating quality & inability to achieve target sale, the stock
looks struggling.
Two wheeler auto industry is going through turmoil with declining
demand reasoned because of increasing interest rate & restrained
financial availability. Supply of two wheelers is on an increase with
players like Honda, Hero Honda, TVS, M&M expanding their capacities.
Bajaj is to be most affected with this gap in demand and supply as its
brand preference has fallen from 2nd position to 5th position in
market.
Bajaj reported sale of 322235 two wheeler units, which includes export
of 158422 units in April 2011 month. Last year in same month, Bajaj
saw sale of 276095 units with export of 113911. This implies that the
domestic sale of Bajaj remained stagnant with around 163000 units over
the year showing no growth. Hero Honda, market leader in two wheeler,
showed growth of whooping 40% in domestic market in the same time
frame. Hero Honda is venturing into exports as well.
With Government withdrawing DEPB benefit scheme for exporters, Bajaj
auto will face severe problems in terms of their export profit. Rajiv
Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto, stated his concern regarding the fall in export
to take place due to withdrawing of DEPB scheme and increasing
competition from China market in exports. He also shard his worry
about further slowdown expected in two wheelers.
With increase in competition, fall in demand, pressure rising due to
high input cost, tightening of export policies, Bajaj Auto is losing
grounds from domestic as well as export market. We recommend a STRONG
SELL on Bajaj Auto with target of Rs.1100.
