I was just at a nice facility considering it for our upcoming Tolkien
Moot 2011 convention (this summer) http://tolkienmoot.org
During the tour and discussion process, they asked if we were associated
in any way with SpoCon, a much larger general SciFi and gaming
convention with around 600-800 participants this past summer.
I indicated no. They actually sighed with relief out loud, but then
again tensely asked if we were anything like them, most notably asking
"is this a gaming convention with role playing gamers?" (I kid you not),
I indicated that yes we did participate in RPGing as a core part of the
convention, and when I asked why that was a concern, they indicated they
had been approached by SpoCon, but when they interviewed SpoCon's
previous host facilities (Gonzaga University), that they had trashed the
facilities, been very roudy and out of control, so they had declined to
allow Spocon to use their facilities, and they were concerned about
other gamer-type conventions being the same.
I assured them we were nothing like that, and I think I successfully
assuaged their concerns.
SpoCon has tried for 2 years now to talk me into merging my convention
with theirs, but I have been repeatedly warned away by others that it
would be a bad idea for various reasons, so I've continued with our much
smaller gathering independently. (30 or so people).
I wonder, how many of you have heard of, or seen yourself, role playing
gaming conventions that have been similarly harmful to the reputation of
gamers?

holistic 'well medicine' deals with wellness and health promotion"
