I can't see how free booze for frat boys can help! In the North Texas area, we have not had any problems (except the time in the early '90s that lightning hit a transformer and the con was without power most of the day - the next year they handed out flashlights with the registration kit). I keep it in my game case along with some plumbers candles and matches, but haven't needed them yet.
It is standard behavior code that alcohol stays out of the game areas, including the hospitality room. These cons are almost always held in hotels which have clearly visible bars (often in the lobby), yet I rarely see more than two or three in the bar at any time, and never more than one or two I recognize (by face and/or badge) as being registered gamers.
