Five years later (in 2008), Gary Gygax passed away exactly on that date. Again, some time later an additional idea came up: Read an RPG in Public Week, to create more visibility for our hobby. On three weeks every year (around the anniversaries of birthdays of Dave Arneson and Gygax, and the latter's day of death), people are encouraged to read RPGs in the public.

Now, a new event has been announced.
March 30th: TableTopDay.
"International TableTop Day is a reminder to spend more time and strengthen the bonds with the people who matter most, our friends and family, by playing games together. Tabletop gaming promotes many positive social and cognitive benefits like increased communication, team work, planning, and is an excellent stress relieving activity for all ages. International TableTop Day also represents the one year anniversary of the launch of the hit show TableTop, hosted by Wil Wheaton (Star Trek, Big Bang Theory, Leverage). [...] International TableTop Day is a celebration for all the fans of tabletop gaming. A single day where the whole world is brought together in a common purpose of spending time together and having fun."

Generally, I welcome these initiatives. They may strengthen the community (and maybe bring in new players). However, I'm not sure if I will get round to take part in any of these next month. How about you?
