During the SXSW film festival in March premiered "Zero Charisma"
(http://www.zerocharismathemovie.com), a movie about RPG nerds. It now
seems to be in the 2013 film festival circuit, though I haven't found a
nice overview over screening dates.
The synopsis:
"Metal-loving gamer geek, Scott Weidemeyer, lives with his ornery
grandmother and works a lousy job at a donut shop. But every Tuesday
night, he is the omnipotent Game Master, guiding his role-players
through a tabletop journey of fantasy and adventure. However, when
neo-nerd hipster Miles joins his game, Scott begins to resent the
admiration Miles receives from the other players. To make matters worse,
the health of his grandmother begins to falter, and his estranged mother
visits town, reminding Scott of a childhood he'd just as soon forget.
Caught in a spiral of rage and delusion, Scott is forced to take drastic
steps to reclaim his honor, and his identity as the Game Master."

It sounds like it could be loaded with stereotypes, but the reviews are
actually quite good, even promising. Still, the hobby might be presented
not as a normal activity, but as something special, maybe even deviant?
Discussions of the movie go back to 2011, when the directors first
announced it. Their website must have included some unfortunate comments
about gaming as "infantilism" at the time...
Anyway, I'll refrain from judgment until I've seen it. Below is a list
of reviews.
